The bergamot orange (citrus Bergamia) a small fruit between a lemon and grapefruit is known to be one of the most delicate citrus plants, requiring special climate and soil in order to thrive.

Grown mainly in the Mediterranean and is named after the Italian city of Bergamo

The citrus Bergamia tree stands as high as 12 meters and is covered in long, green leaves and white flowers when it blossoms

The essential oil is captured from the rind of the greenish orange coloured fruit

One of the most unique and delicate citrus oils due to the fact that it is a bitter fruit that produces a sweet oil and its ability to be both up lifting and calming

About 100 fruits are needed to produce about 88ml of sweet smelling oil, widely used in perfumes and as food flavouring – one of its most common uses is in Earl Gray tea

Skin and hair care – studies have found that bergamot essential oil also aids in keeping the skin youthful. This has resulted in it being extensively used in cosmetics, beauty soaps, lotions and creams. It is also used to treat the effects of scarring from acne on the skin. Mix a few drops of bergamot essential oil with water as a face wash for oily skin. The grease cutting action of the oil will remove excess oil from the face, leaving it smooth and soft. The antibiotic and antifungal properties of bergamot essential oil make it excellent for reducing itchy and scalp infections. Add 2 or 3 drops to your regular shampoo to make use of its antimicrobial properties

Steam inhalation of a few drops of bergamot essential oil in a vaporizer can relieve respiratory difficulties form colds and coughs. This helps loosen the phlegm. Take a few drops of bergamot essential oil and hold it over the nose to assist difficult breathing. Alternatively for severe chest congestion mix 5 drops of oil with 5 drops of eucalyptus oil in a diffuser – this combination gives the best result at night
